Billy Myers was the man you needed in front of goal with only 10 seconds left on the clock of the 2023 Ballarat Football League grand final. It was a tricky shot, a snap from the boundary, but it’s one Billy had kicked plenty of times before.

North Ballarat held the lead over the Devils in the first three quarters as spectators nervously watched on. But in those last few seconds, it was anyone’s game.

Hundreds of supporters lined the boundary donned black and white to watch the boys bring home the cup. A journey which was looking a likely disappointment in the beginning, but after the umpire’s call in the later stages of the fourth quarter, it could be home.

Billy lined up for goal and it felt like the crowd went completely silent, on tenterhooks to see whether he would kick the winning goal.

One step, two, and ball hit boot.

Billy dropped to his knee and pulled his arm back for his famous celebration: the bow and arrow. The crowd erupted and Devils fans began to rejoice. With only one point in it, the cup could be making the trip back down the freeway.

Those last 10 seconds felt like years as the ball was thrown up in the middle for one last ruck contest. The siren sounded and instantly the oval was filled with a sea of black and white.

Tears, cheers and a whole lot of joy filled the stadium as the Devil army celebrated an almighty win against the North Ballarat Roosters.

There was much to celebrate on the evening of the 2023 Grand Final. The Darley Football Netball Club had four netball teams in the grand final, with two taking home the trophy. The Senior Female Football side also won their premiership the week before, so celebrations were aplenty.

Festivities continued at Darley’s new state of the art clubrooms recently completed in collaboration with the Moorabool Shire Council. Drinks were flowing and the vibes were high as everyone toasted to 2023 premiership teams as they entered the facility.

And on presentation night a few days later, coach Dan Jordan addressed the club. His words etched into the minds of those in attendance. The Devils road to redemption is over.

We made it.
