Our final practice match against Kyabram was a great hit out for Darley. Playing against last year’s Goulburn Valley Football League Premiers, (who were undefeated all year,) we knew it would not be an easy game.
A 4pm start with a list of 24 players, weather a balmy 22 degrees, it was near perfect conditions.
The Devils got off to a slow start, still finding their feet under Coach Heath Scotland. The Graham brothers once again dominating in the first half keeping us in touch, Darley was 16 points down at half time.
Looking like 3rd quarter specialists, our two local young guns Matty Inglis and Leigh “Spud” Spiteri stood out with in a spectacular display. With Tate Stone also leading the way the Devils were up by ¾ time.
With a great team effort and our superior defence in the last quarter we shocked the Kyabram faithful to give us the win.
Our thanks go to Digger Edwards for his boundary umpiring effort. Digger might need a few lessons from the young guns Brody Ward, Aaron Cadman and Jayson Fawcett though and it made for some interesting throw-ins to amuse the spectators.
We also thank Shane Leonard for goal umpiring, Brae Cousins and Tom Thacker as water boys, and of course to the Darley faithful that made the effort to come all the way to Ky to support us.
Finally a huge thank you to the two Mooroopna FC ladies who came and strapped, massaged and looked after our boys for the day – you did a great job and we appreciate it.
