Local footy writer Todd Whelan catches up with the Devils in isolation for a series of (phone) interviews over the coming weeks – stay connected with the DFNC Facebook page to find out how the players are travelling….

Devil: Shane Page (Captain) #28

Games played:   110 (Darley)

Recruited from: Kyneton (2013)

Club Champion (Whelan Medal): 2018, 2019

Premierships: 2015, 2017

Position: Wing/Half back

AFL support team: Melbourne

Occupation: Carpenter

(TW): The footy landscape looks pretty dire at the moment, are you confident there’ll be any local footy this year?

(SP): I’m not that confident to be honest, more hopeful than anything else – I really miss it.

(TW): What would constitute a fair and reasonable season?

(SP): If every side was able to play each other once, i’d be happy with that.

(TW): What are you doing to stay fit in isolation?

(SP): Running….plenty of running lol!

(TW): What food are you finding it most difficult to avoid given the current restrictions (ie no footy/limited training)?

(SP): Village Pizza and Pasta on Main Street – it’s too good!

(TW): You’re a back-to-back Club Champion 2018/19. The club won the same number of home and away games in those years – which side had the greater capability of winning the flag?

(SP): I’d say 2018 with Steven Kennedy and Dylan Reid – we were pretty close (Preliminary Final)

(TW): The clubs finals chances this season (if goes ahead) are considered less likely than in recent times – how can you improve after losing Heath Scotland, Brian and Nick Graham?

(SP): You can’t replace like-for-like with that calibre of player. We have a bigger group of younger blokes that have been around 2-3 years now – they should be near ready to take the next step influencing games. If we can’t get improvement from within it will be difficult.

(TW): How important is it for the clubs Premiership prospects moving forward is it to find a bona fide ruckman?

(SP): It’s definitely important but certainly not the be all and end all.

(TW): You’ve enjoyed flag success with Darley in 2015 and 2017 – who was the best of the crew to party with?

(SP): Tate Stone – he’s the king!

(TW): As Captain and leader of the club, have you any parting words you wish to extend to all of the sponsors, supporters and fellow staff?

(SP): I hope everyone is staying safe – we can’t wait to get out there fit and ready to go – stick with us!
